Description
This was taken at the old mining town of Bodie, California. Designated as a state historic park in 1962, Bodie is now maintained in a state of "arrested decay." Gold was discovered in the area in 1859 and by 1879 Bodie had a population of about 10,000, a few churches and 65 saloons. By 1920, the population had dwindled to about 700 people, mostly families that had decided to stay in Bodie rather than move on to more prosperous strikes. 1915 saw Bodie labled as a "ghost town" even though there remained a few permanent residents. One of the last people living in Bodie was also a caretaker hired in 1943 by the family which owned much of the land upon which the town was situated to protect the town from vandalism. Bodie has been named California's official state gold rush ghost town and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Only about 5 percent of the original buildings remain standing and interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods.
