Description
The city of Venice is actually made up of a cluster of 118 islands, linked by more than 400 footbridges. There are no cars on the island; transportation is by boat or foot. Slowly sinking and loosing its population, Venice remains one of the world’s most beautiful, fascinating and visited cities. Part of its charm is that it has remained relatively unchanged for the past 600 years.
A major powerhouse in the areas of commerce, the navy and the arts, Venice was wealthy for most of its history. With land at a premium and capitalism as its core, there were few large landowners or castles such as were built in Europe. Instead, affluent Venetians built large palaces along the Grand Canal in order to do business, entertain and display their wealth.
